Recent rains a drop in the ocean

Some 1.5 million cubic meters have flowed into dams over the past 48 hours, but experts are calling it a drop in the ocean, warning that the water shortage problem is still very much with us.

The inflow of water followed two days of heavy rainfall across the island, and snow fell on the Troodos mountain range.

Limassol saw some of the worst weather, with fire services there receiving hundreds of emergency calls. Read the rest of this entry »

Rain at last as vicious storms lash the island

The Heavens opened over Cyprus yesterday providing much-needed water to the parched land and empty reservoirs, while also flooding roads, houses and highways, and leaving some drivers trapped in their cars.

Limassol was by far the worst hit, with the Fire Service answering over 100 calls for help. Heavy rainfall poured over the coastal town from the morning until midday. The emergency services were called out to pump water from flooded basements, shops and houses. Read the rest of this entry »

Life without water

The Facts are all there:  Cyprus faces its worst water crisis in modern history. Methods ranging from water cuts, expanded desalination to expensive imports have been tried but the reality of reduced resources has not managed to embed itself in our consciousness.

A look at the details proves scary reading: just last week the Commissioner for the Environment Charalambos Theopemptou told reporters to expect more heat waves and changing weather in Cyprus. Rainfall for this November just past was at its lowest in eight years with only 19mm of an expected 53mm arriving. Read the rest of this entry »
