Extreme weather warning

Extreme weather conditions are expected from this afternoon and continuing until the weekend, the Weather Service announced today.

Heavy rains

State services battled throughout the entire day yesterday as more heavy rains fell across the island, flooding dozens of dwellings and causing traffic havoc.

No injuries were reported, although a few people trapped in their homes and vehicles came close to drowning.

The hardest hit areas were the villages of Avgorou and Frenaros, in the Famagusta district, and the suburbs and city of Limassol. Read the rest of this entry »

High levels of dust

Vulnerable groups in society, like children, the elderly and pregnant women are being warned to stay indoors due to extremely high dust levels in the atmosphere.

An official from the Labour Inspection Department yesterday said the high levels of very small dust particles brought on from North Africa could cause problems and discomfort to these groups or others with breathing problems like asthma sufferers. Read the rest of this entry »

Bad weather set to continue

Stormy weather is set to continue until Wednesday with mild mornings turning to wind and rain by noon, the Weather Service said Monday.

Sunday was marked by rain and storms in several areas but without the damage caused late last week.

Heatwave

The heatwave is expected to continue over the weekend with a system of high pressure coming from Northwest Africa, the Meteorology Service said yesterday with temperatures expected to reach a minimum of 41 degrees Celsius

Eleni Andreou Registered Clinical Dietician suggests people eat lighter and drink 8-12 glasses of water during the day, and also fresh juice and milk.

Meals should be low fat such as fish, vegetables, boiled pasta, chicken, salads and fruits.

During hot days people must avoid alcohol, sugar and caffeine as they are dehydrating and can cause sunstroke. Read the rest of this entry »
