Bizarre weather hits Cyprus - flooding in east

Torrential rain and hail is blanketing most of Cyprus, in a spell of unusually bad weather.

Stormy weather on the way

Residents were warned yesterday not to put away their umbrellas and raincoats just yet with more rain and storms once again threatening to ruin weekend excursions to the beach and mountains.

Heavy snow blankets rural areas

Schools in some areas were closed yesterday due to some of heavy snowfall in several regions of the island, which left numerous road blocked.

Children took advantage of the time off school to engage in snowball fights with friends, as adults huddled by the fire at home and in coffee shops after spending much of the day clearing away snow from outside their village homes. Read the rest of this entry »

Rain but not enough yet

It may have rained all night on Wednesday but yesterday, water officials said it the in inflow into the reservoirs was still not satisfactory.

“Over the last 24 hours we’ve had the flow of water into the dams increase from around 150,000-200,000 cubic metres to around 560,000 cubic metres,” said Fedro Roussi, senior technical engineer at the Water Development Department. “However, this amount on its own does not satisfy us,” he added. Torrential rain floods Larnaca

Larnaca’s Fire Services had responded to over 130 calls by late last night from people whose premises were flooded by over four hours of torrential rain.

Roads, car parks and land plots were turned into small lakes, while both of Larnaca’s Fire Service stations were inundated with calls from residents in the town’s coastal area all the way up to the old airport.

According to the Fire Services last night, the services responded to 132 calls, of which 15 involved cars that had become trapped on flooded roads. Read the rest of this entry »
