An official with the Weather Service told state radio that the heatwave is expected to last until Sunday, when it will cool slightly. This is the third heatwave within three weeks and authorities have warned employers and self-employed people to take all necessary measures to protect workers and themselves by not excluding shift change and breaks for those working in direct sunlight.

Visitors to the island have also been advised to take precautions against the extreme heat by drinking plenty of water to avoid dehydration, the main cause of heat exhaustion.

The high temperatures are also expected to increased demand for electricity, as people switch on their air-conditioning to combat the sweltering temperatures.
