Bad weather to return to Cyprus, snow forecast for mountain areas

Forecasters say the cloudy skies during the day will lead to more local rain and some snow over the mountains, as the island heads into another cold snap.

Temperatures will drop by a few degrees from the seasonal average and heavy winds will continue to batter the coasts, especially in the east and west. The Troodos webcam, mounted in the chalet at the base of the slopes, currently shows heavy mist, but as yet no snow has fallen.

Thunderstorms accompanied by heavy rains and strong winds have been triggered by a low pressure system with more rain expected overnight, especially in coastal regions.

Despite the showers, rainfall for March is only 24 percent of the usual amount.

Weekend showers cleared the dust in the atmosphere, which had been lingering for several days.

Last Friday the dust level rate was estimated at 70,6 micrograms per cubic metre in Limassol and 37 and 40 in other areas.
