More snow expected

Snow fell on Troodos on Friday with more to come in the coming days as the met service expected more intense weather phenomena from Monday.

Met official Stavros Vasilliades said snow fell in the morning and “we will have more in the next days” with some expected in lower regions. The weather caused the cancellation of a meeting between President Nicos Anastasiades and the leaders of the parliamentary parties at the presidential retreat on Troodos.

In Paphos, an 11-metre boat berthed at the harbour sank after hitting the rocks amid strong winds.

Vasilliades said rain was expected in some areas on Friday evening with temperatures dropping to 6 degrees Celsius inland, 10 on the west coast, and 8 in other coastal areas.

Temperatures in the highlands will be zero.

“The weather will be mainly cloudy on Monday and Tuesday with rain and regional storms expected, as well as snow on Troodos,” Vasilliades said.

The phenomena could be intense in some regions and snow was expected to fall on lower altitudes on Tuesday.

A drop in temperature was expected from Tuesday.

“The 15-degree temperatures inland and 17 degrees on the coast we have today are normal for the season,” the met officer said.

They were expected to drop two to three degrees on Tuesday according to current forecasts.

Strong winds were also expected, he said, urging the public to take precautions.
