Problems on roads as more rain forecast for Wednesday

Heavy rain has been falling in Cyprus overnight and a number of roads are closed or very slippery because of the accumulation on water.

More scattered showers are forecast for today with snow in the Troodos mountains. Roads to Troodos are currently open only to vehicles with four wheel drive or cars equipped with snow chains.

Road conditions

Police said that the heavy rain has caused problems to roads in many districts.

Paphos district

Because of flooding of rivers, mud and rock slides and and subsidence of the road surface the following roads are closed:

Ayios Nicolaos -Pera Vasas at Tselefos Bridge, Kelokedara-Amargeti-Nata at Zorbilli Bridge, Salamiou- Galataria at Panayia tou Sindi Bridge and Ayios Nicolaos-Mandria.

The Ayios Nicolaos-Kaminaria and the Stavrokonnos-Filousa roads are open but dangerous because of rock and mudslides.

Limassol district

The Karvounas-Troodos, Platres-Troodos and Prodromos-Troodos roads are open only to vehicles with four wheel drive or cars equipped with snow chains.

Nicosia district

Because of the accumulation of water on the road surface drivers are urged to be particularly careful on the following roads: Archangelos roundabout, Alexandroupolis bridge (Strovolos Municipality) and Red Cross Bridge.

Police said that there is heavy rain and strong winds in many areas and drivers are urged to be careful, to drive slowly and adhere to the traffic code.

Weather forecast

Low pressure is affecting the area and Wednesday will be partly cloudy and at intervals mainly cloudy with isolated rain or thunderstorms. Snow or sleet is expected in the higher mountain peaks in the Troodos.

Winds will be westerly, average to strong becoming gradually very strong on the coast and the sea will be rough.

Temperatures will be 19 C inland and on the coasts and 7 C in the mountains.

Tonight will be partly cloudy and at intervals cloudy with scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms. Snow or sleet is expected in the mountains. Temperatures will fall to 6 C inland, around 12 C on the west and north coasts, 10 C on the south and east coasts and -1 C in the mountains.

On Thursday there will be intervals of mainly fine weather and intervals of cloud with scattered showers or thunderstorms. Snow is expected in the mountains. The weather will improve from late in the afternoon. Temperatures will drop to a little below average for the time of year.

Friday will be mainly fine with increased cloud at intervals in the afternoon. Temperatures will edge up to a little above average for the time of year.

On Saturday, there will be intervals of fine weather and intervals of cloud and isolated showers and some snow is forecast in the Troodos peaks. Temperatures will remain a little above average for the time of year.

At the time of issue of the early morning weather bulletin there was 54 cm of snow on Troodos Square.
