Rain and storms anticipated from Monday night

An update Meteorological Department forecast has predicted rain from late Monday night with a steady drop in temperatures also forecast by the middle of the week.

Earlier forecasts had predicted the wet weather would arrive on Tuesday.

Department official Panayiotis Lingis on Monday morning told state radio gathering clouds from the afternoon onwards would lead to showers and storms by late in the night and the early hours of Tuesday.

“These will begin in the west and spread to the rest of the island, being quite intense in places,” Lingis said, adding the Paphos district and the Akamas area in particular was expected to be the first to be affected. He said drier weather was expected to return by Tuesday afternoon.

Noting that flash rains were not as welcome as steadier rain over a longer period, Lingis also said temperatures were expected fall from the 28 °C inland forecast for Monday to 25 °C or 26 °C on Tuesday and down to as much as 20 °C by Wednesday. They may rise again after then, he added.

The forecast for Monday is 28°C inland and on the south and east coasts, 25°C on the west and north coasts and 18°C in the mountains.
