Storms lash Cyprus as winter arrives

The severe weather, high winds and heavy rains are causing havoc in some parts of the Paphos region according to the fire department.

Tornados were reported in the Acheleia area near Paphos airport, with damage to nearby farm enclosures, crops and outbuildings.

President of Timi Council Charalambous Charalambous said that the tornado near the airport control tower was of ‘biblical proportions’.

A metal hangar building was severely damaged by the winds.

There have also been power cuts in many towns and villages across the region including Paphos, Emba, Tremithousa, Mesogi, Tsada, Kathikas, Droushia and Ineia – some areas remain without electricity.

The weather, which has seen storms across the island, will remain unsettled until at least Sunday.
