Snowy and cold start to 2016

We may not have had a white Christmas in Cyprus but snow has been forecast as the old year merges into the new one.

New Year’s Day is also anticipated to be the coldest day of the week.

Speaking to The Cyprus Weekly, Meteorological Services official Iasonas Christodoulou said snow in mountain communities was expected along with sleet in lower areas.

“There will accompany rain and isolated storms as well as lower than usual temperatures throughout Cyprus. Temperatures will reach 3 °C inland and 6 °C on the coasts and -6°C in the mountains on by Thursday night”, Christodoulou said.

They were forecast to reach highs of 9°C inland, 11°C on the coasts and -1°C in the mountains on Thursday afternoon.

On Friday, maximum temperatures are forecast to reach a high of 8°C inland, 10°C on the coasts and -5°C in the mountains.

“It looks set to be the coldest day of the five-day period,” Christodoulou noted. “Temperatures are a significant seven to eight degrees lower than the average for this time of year.”

Frost is anticipated in the morning followed by cloudy skies, showers and possibly isolated storms. More snow is also anticipated in the mountains.

Saturday and Sunday will also be overcast with the chance of more snow, particularly on Saturday.

Christodoulou cautioned people to be especially careful on the roads over the coming days, due to the significant frost anticipated.
